OTC 3367 Digital Timing Light Review

OTC 3367 Digital Timing Light

Why pay $118 for this here when you can buy the same timing light here for $34 to $52. Let me explain, 4 guys who are members of a local car club, me and 3 others. We become friends and hang out in each others shops and what do you know!!! 3 of us have the same otc timing light sold here and 1 has the Actron timing light sold here. Same cheap material same crappy contruction all the same size and shape, all no longer used because they all have electrical shorts in the leads near the handle of the light. None of these lights has lasted long so if you insist on buying it then at least pay less. I am a big fan of OTC tools I have a lot of their stuff in my shop but shame on them for this.

Power Probe III Ultimate 12 to 24 Volt Automotive Electrical Circuit Tester Kit Review

Power Probe III Ultimate 12 to 24 Volt Automotive Electrical Circuit Tester Kit

The 3rd generation powerprobe includes a number of changes for additional flexibility. In short, it is a vehicle powered DVM with both a 20 foot cable and an additional 20 foot extension giving you a 40 foot working range around either the battery terminals or cigarette lighter outlet, both clips and a plug are included in the kit.
With the series 3 units they use a hard gold plated banana jack to hold the removable probe or cables to extend your reach. If you purchase the accessory kit, it includes piercing probes that self center on a conductor, pierce the insulation, and attach to the jack allowing you to tap a wire at any point to locate intermittant problems.
While the DVM is backlit all the time, it also has 2 bright white LEDs facing forward to aid in finding and probing terminals in dark places. The actual probe is hardgold plated with a sharp tip and removable at the banana jack. Another identical probe is included with a screw-in female banana jack in the accessories kit to retrofit the powerprobe I and II units to accept external cables and probes.
If you need to excite a circuit with a connection to battery ground or to battery positive, the switch allows a momentary connection to bridge the probe tip to either voltage which is useful in testing relay driven circuits, indicator lights, and other small current loads. The prope voltage is always displayed during testing on the meter. The voltage/ground switch is circuit breaker protected in case you accidentally drive 12 volts into a chassis ground. Additionally, since the switch takes abuse it is easily replaced if it fails with just a screwdriver.
Combined with the testlead set, the powerprobe 3 greatly simplifies testing of vehicular wire and big rigs up to a single trailer. The DVM has 5 selectable modes of operation designed for different problems. Reading the manual is important to get the full value from this meter.
Although the price is a little high, the design and construction quality are excellent. Enough wire is provided to check running lights on trailers or to look for blown fuses. All of the wiring is exceptionally flexible and heavily insulated with top quality connectors. Both the tester and accessories come in hard plastic cases that can be stowed in a service box.
Not mentioned in specifications is that although the probe runs from 12-24 VDC, the meter can be used to measure voltages up to 80VDC.

Vector VEC008 Digital LCD Voltmeter, 12 Volt Review

Vector VEC008 Digital LCD Voltmeter, 12 Volt

I've had one for a couple of years now.
Pros: Could not be easier to use. The Red-Yellow-Green LEDs give an instant check on your voltage. The backlight makes it possible to check voltage at night while driving -- so you can see the effect those KC HiLiTES 631 Daylighter - 6 In Black 130w Long Range Off Road Light System (Pair) you just installed are having on your charging system.
Cons: Accuracy may or may not be appropriate for all possible uses. It's good enough for basic automotive uses IMHO. The convenient LEDs don't go off, and the display is a little lame: when your system has 12V or higher, all three are on, not just the green LED. The backlighting is not very bright. The convenient adjustable display is susceptible to popping off if one applies too much pressure to it. It is not an instant reading -- you have to wait for a couple of seconds before the voltage value appears.
Let me address a couple of issues from other reviews. Regarding the ability to read voltages while starting the car -- I think this depends upon how your lighter outlet is wired. Recent Ford F150s have an additional power outlet which is not switched during starting, for example. So I am able to read voltages...if this is really important, consider running a separate lighter outlet direct from your battery if you are automotively handy. But I would not categorize this as a defect of the unit.
Second, several posts have complained about the unit being fragile. I don't agree with that description. The VEC008 Achilles heel is the flexible housing, which can be disconnected with a little pressure. This is probably better than having it just break, and it's an easy repair. Just take a #0 Phillips screwdriver (like the Klein Tool 604-3 No.0 Phillips-Tip Miniature Screwdriver with 3-Inch Round Shank), undo two screws, and it's easy to re-assemble. Hint: Do not lose the screws.
Regarding accuracy...this is not a Fluke multimeter. If one is really serious about this, i.e. if you run a lot of accessories off your lighter socket, then a fixed voltage gauge like the Auto Meter 6391 Cobalt Digital Voltmeter Gauge is probably something you should consider, especially if you find yourself needing jump starts!
So...having some way of measuring voltage in your car is a good idea, and I can generally recommend the VEC008. It is not without drawbacks, so I will give it three stars.
