(More customer reviews)The lantern's LED's give a decent light...considering the 3 AA battery and small (unit) diameter limitations. But for some reason, this decent illumination doesn't carry-over into the flashlight. The flashlight is Ok for close-up work, but greater than 5 feet, the illumination drops-off considerably. [Follow-up: By the way, if you don't mind a hook in the middle of your living room ceiling, this is an excellent lantern--for the price--to hang from your ceiling during power emergencies. It casts an even glow downward and throughout the room, and it's lite enough to prevent most hooks from pulling out of the ceiling (those that aren't especially anchored that is). The only liteweight, low cost, mini size lantern that I've found that is brighter is the 70 Lumens Rayovac that Amazon sells. But to get the full effect of 70 lumens, you have to remove the diffuser on that Rayovac one, and hang it upside down--with the provided hook on the bottom--to get a decidely brighter light. Having that bare, undiffused light IS a little 'harsh' to look at on the Rayovac 70 Lumens lantern, but if you're not going to be starring at it, you do get greater light output for about $5.00 more on the Rayovac. But then, you don't get a built-in flashlight like on the Wagan (being reviewed here), which as I said above, is mediocre at best. [ Later follow-up: I bought another one, but I am sending it back. The switch that changes from the lantern to the flashlight only worked intermittently.]
