(More customer reviews)I shopped and shopped to try and find a little sub that would fit behind the seat of my F250 regular cab pickup. My original problem was, with the 6 1/2 inch speakers in the doors (kenwood) and the 6 X 8 inch speakers at the rear corners (panasonic) there was no hint whatsoever of any bass instruments. It went loud, sure, but no bass. I'm not a hip-hopper and don't need the loud boing boing sound you hear from the funny little cars with tiny wheels, but I do like to hear a bass guitar or drum or tuba.
So I searched through the net to see what was available. There were some that fit under the seat that would obviously provide little or no help. I've built large enclosures for myself and for concert setups so I know that a lot of bass requires many cubic inches of tuned woodworking. I had already bought an Audiobahn amplified speaker for my little economy car, but there's noplace to put anything that big in my pickup cab.
So when I saw the ads for the Pyle systems that obviously copied the Audiobahn, but for half price or less, I was certainly interested. Decided to get the 8" because if it didn't fit behind the seat comfortably, it was still small enough to put on the hump over the transmission on the front floorboard.
So it arrived yesterday afternoon and I opened the box right away. Immediately pleased to find that it is covered in a bright silver diamondplate vinyl... very complimentary to pickup truck tastes.
But then the next thing I noticed was that the speaker is exposed on the front side and can be damaged fairly easily, or can collect dirt or possibly attract metallic magnetic objects. Then I noticed the unit came without installation instructions or wires or connectors of any kind. Not a problem for me or for most people, but some of you might want to have a step by step hookup booklet or RCA cables or power cables. The Audiobahns certainly did.
Anyway I had no problem hooking them up and used one of my extra computer RCA cables and some lamp wire to do the wiring. I simply powered it from the fuse in my block that used to protect the loud ignition and seatbelt buzzer that I immediately disconnected upon buying the truck.
I did have a huge disappointment when I pulled out my new Kenwood 532 and found it had no subwoofer preamp outputs... I thought all receivers of any price had them these days... not the fault of my speakers at all of course, just needed to rant because I bought the receiver from Crutchfield and they didn't publish my review!
Anyhow the unit does fit behind the seat with it forward TWO clicks. I'm only 5'8" so I still can be somewhat comfortable with the seat forward like that, but you lanky dudes might think about it. Again, it's quite nice looking and can sit crosswise or lengthwise on the floor in the middle in front of your bench seat if you have one like I do. It's only 10inches wide and 20 inches long.
Sound is "OK". I had to hook mine to the rear speaker preamp outputs, so I don't have a seperate volume control for the sub, but it makes enough bass to just fill in the difference...just what i needed. Don't expect it to make your sythesized drum and bass bumps though... it resonates at high volume and it will sound more like bass bongo...!
All in all I'm satisfied, especially for 75 bucks including free shipping. I paid a hundred eighty for the Audiobahn... but it does sound a lot better. I don't play my stereo all that loud so I expect this subwoofer to last indefinitely.
Bottom line, ok sound, well made, I like it... three and a half stars.
